Launceston

Central Launceston takes in the CBD and the inner suburbs around it, from the river flats of Invermay to the hillside streets of East Launceston and Trevallyn. Typical work here is cold-morning battery failures, flat batteries from short city trips, work vans around the river precincts and wiring for cars that head out of town on weekends.

Suburbs in Launceston

Inner Launceston packs a lot of variety into a few kilometres. The CBD is all short trips, parking stations and street parking. Invermay sits on a levee-protected floodplain beside the North Esk and Tamar, with commercial strips, UTAS Stadium and the Inveresk precinct. Newstead and East Launceston are established family streets with schools and older homes, South Launceston lines the Midland Highway, and Trevallyn climbs above Cataract Gorge. Winter nights regularly drop below 2 degrees and fog is common, so batteries, heaters and lights get worked hard everywhere.

Common auto electrical jobs in Launceston

The cold, damp winters tie the whole area together, but the river flats, the highway corridors and the hills each add their own problems.

Frosty mornings and tired batteries

Launceston sits in a valley where cold air settles, and the city records sub-2-degree nights on around 60 days a year. A battery that coped through summer often fails on the first properly cold morning, because cold slows the chemistry inside it while thick engine oil makes the starter work harder. If your car cranks slowly in May, get the battery tested before winter sets in. Our guide on how to test a car battery shows what a healthy reading looks like.

Short trips around the city

Plenty of inner-city driving is a couple of kilometres at a time: into the CBD, to school, to the shops on Brisbane Street and back. Those trips rarely give the alternator enough time to put back what the starter took out, especially in winter with headlights, the heater fan and the rear demister all running. Over a few weeks the battery slides lower until one morning it will not start. A longer drive each week or a smart charger at home keeps things in balance.

Damp, flooding and corroded wiring

Low-lying parts of the inner city, especially Invermay, sit on the floodplain where the North Esk and South Esk meet the Tamar. Even without a major flood, cars parked in low spots after heavy rain can take water into the floor, where many looms and body modules live. Combined with Launceston's damp winters, that leads to green corrosion in plugs and earth points, and odd faults with locks, windows and warning lights. Drying the car out quickly and treating connectors early saves a lot of later diagnosis.

Weekend towing out of town

Inner Launceston is a short drive from the Tamar Valley, the lakes and the coast, so a lot of city cars tow a box trailer, boat or camper on weekends. Trailers stored outside through a wet winter often come out with dead lights, usually from corroded plug pins or a broken earth wire rather than blown globes. Clean the plug, check the earth and test every function before you leave. Our guide on why trailer lights stop working walks through it.
