Meander Valley

Meander Valley runs from Launceston's western edge at Prospect Vale and Blackstone Heights out through Hadspen, Carrick, Westbury and Deloraine to Mole Creek under the Great Western Tiers. The work here mixes commuter cars, farm utes and machinery, and touring vehicles heading for the high country.

Meander Valley at a glance

Suburbs in Meander Valley

The eastern end of Meander Valley is really part of Greater Launceston: Prospect Vale has its shopping centre and a small industrial park, Blackstone Heights sits above the South Esk, and Hadspen keeps growing. Head west along the Bass Highway or the older Meander Valley Road and it turns to poppy, dairy and grazing country around Carrick, Hagley, Westbury and Bracknell. Deloraine is the main town, about 50 km out, and beyond it Mole Creek and Meander back onto the Tiers. That spread means commuter cars at one end and farm and touring vehicles at the other.

Common auto electrical jobs in Meander Valley

Distance from town and the kind of driving change a lot across this valley, so the common jobs shift as you head west from Prospect Vale towards the Tiers.

Frosty starts across the valley

Winter mornings in the Meander Valley can be cold enough to frost the windscreen, and cold slows down the chemistry inside a battery just when the starter motor needs the most current. A battery that was borderline in autumn often gives up on the first frosty morning. Testing it before winter, keeping the terminals clean and replacing it once the cranking slows is cheaper than a tow. Our guide on how to test a car battery shows what the numbers mean.

Farm ute and machinery lighting

Poppy, dairy and grazing properties around Carrick, Hagley, Westbury and Bracknell keep utes, tractors and spray rigs working before sunrise and after dark. Work lights, beacons and tail lights take a beating from vibration, mud and pressure washing. LED lamps with sealed plugs last much longer than old halogen units, and a proper relay and fuse for each light circuit stops one fault from killing everything. Check every light before moving machinery along Meander Valley Road.

Dual batteries for the high country

Deloraine and Mole Creek are jumping-off points for the Great Western Tiers, the Highland Lakes and Cradle Mountain, and a fridge left running overnight at a cold campsite can flatten a single battery. A second battery with a DC-DC charger keeps the fridge, lights and camp gear away from the starting battery, and suits newer vehicles with smart alternators. Our guide on how a dual battery system works covers the options.

Floats, stock trailers and caravans

Semi-rural blocks around Travellers Rest and Hadspen, and the farms further west, mean plenty of horse floats, stock trailers and box trailers on the valley's roads. Corroded plug pins, broken earth wires and water in the lamp housings cause most trailer light faults. Heavier floats and caravans also need working electric brakes and a controller set up for the load. Check plugs, globes and brakes before every trip, not just before a holiday.
