Common auto electrical jobs in Low Head

Low Head is about 5 km north of George Town, home to Australia's oldest continuously operating pilot station and the Low Head Lighthouse, whose foghorn still sounds on Sundays. Its beaches are popular for snorkelling and diving, and George Town Aerodrome is within the locality.

Caravan power and solar

With two caravan parks and plenty of travellers passing through, Low Head sees lots of caravans relying on house batteries and solar. If the battery won't last overnight, the cause may be an undersized solar panel, an old battery or a faulty regulator. Work out your daily power use first. Our guide on how much solar you need for a caravan helps with the sums.

Boat trailers at the jetties

With jetties and pontoons on both the river and ocean sides, Low Head is a busy spot for boaties. Salt water quickly corrodes trailer lights, plugs and earth connections. Unplug before launching, rinse the trailer with fresh water afterwards and use sealed LED lamps. A trailer wiring loom run inside the frame is better protected than one cable-tied along the outside.

Salt spray on everyday cars

Living right on the coast, Low Head cars face salt spray most of the year. Battery terminals, earth points, headlight connectors and anything under the front bumper corrode first. A wash underneath now and then, clean terminals and a protective spray on exposed connections help a lot. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals shows how. Sealed connectors on any new accessory you fit will also last longer near the sea.

Windows and switches that stop working

Damp, salty air works into door switches, window motors and the wiring that runs through door hinges. Windows that work slowly, only some of the time or not at all are common in coastal cars. The fault may be the switch, the motor, the regulator or a broken wire in the door loom. Our guide on why an electric window stops working explains how to narrow it down.

Low Head auto electrical questions

Why won't my caravan battery last the night?

Common causes are an old battery that has lost capacity, not enough solar to replace what you use, or a regulator fault. A 12V fridge is usually the biggest load. Test the battery, check the solar regulator is charging and add up your daily use. If it still doesn't last, you may need more battery or panel capacity.

What causes electric windows to stop working in coastal cars?

Salt and moisture get into the switches, connectors and wiring in the doors. The wiring that bends through the door hinge can also crack over time. Check the fuse first, then whether you can hear the motor. If the motor hums but the window doesn't move, the regulator may be broken.

Local tip for Low Head

If you live in Low Head, open the bonnet every couple of months and look at the battery terminals and earth points. Catching white or green corrosion early means a quick clean rather than a no-start. A fresh-water rinse under the car after beach and boat trips helps as well.
