Common auto electrical jobs in Exeter

Exeter's work comes from farming and long distances: vehicles that work hard, sit in sheds, and travel the Frankford Road and the highway every day.

Rodent damage in shedded vehicles

Utes, tractors and spare cars parked in farm sheds and near feed stores are prime targets for rats and mice in the cooler months. They chew insulation on wiring looms, which leads to strange faults, warning lights or a vehicle that won't start at all. Repairs mean finding every damaged section, not just the first one. Rodent damage to car wiring has tips on prevention.

Work lights and spotlights for farm utes

Early starts in winter and late finishes in autumn mean work lights on the tray and spotlights on the bullbar are a must for many Exeter farm vehicles. LED bars draw less current than old halogen lights, but they still need a relay, a properly sized cable and a fuse close to the battery. Our guide how to wire a 12V relay explains the basic circuit.

Electric brakes for stock and farm trailers

Heavier stock crates, tandem trailers and horse floats need working brakes, and many use electric brakes controlled from the towing vehicle. If the trailer pushes the ute when slowing on the hills around Exeter, the brake controller may be poorly adjusted or the wiring may have failed. A controller needs a heavy enough feed and a reliable earth. Read how to install an electric brake controller.

Alternators that work hard

Farm vehicles running lights, UHF radios, pumps and fridges ask a lot of the charging system, especially at low revs in a paddock. A worn alternator may still charge on the highway but not at idle, leaving the battery low at the end of a long day. Testing charging voltage with everything switched on shows whether the alternator keeps up. How do I know if my alternator needs replacing lists the signs.

Exeter auto electrical questions

Can I run a UHF radio and lights from my ute's main battery?

You can for small loads used while the engine is running. But if you use lights or a fridge with the engine off, a second battery is safer so you don't end up unable to start. Any accessory should have its own fuse near the battery and correctly sized cable. For bigger setups, a dual battery system is usually the better choice.

Why do my ute's lights dim when I turn on the spotlights?

Dimming usually means voltage drop. The spotlights may be wired through thin cable, an old switch without a relay, or a poor earth. It can also mean a weak alternator or battery. Wiring the spotlights through a relay with heavy cable straight from the battery usually fixes it, and it protects the switch from overheating.

Local tip for Exeter

If your farm ute or tractor sits in the shed between seasons, disconnect the battery or fit a battery maintainer, and put rodent deterrent around the shed rather than relying on luck. Check the engine bay for nests before starting, especially after winter. A few minutes of checking is far cheaper than repairing a chewed loom.
